EUROPEAN For MS Windows (Version 2.0)
DESCRIPTION
EUROPEAN is a shareware Package for MS Windows. It allows the
user to add those additional letters having various diacritical marks
as well as several unique characters for European languages using the
Latin (non-Cyrillic) alphabet. Many of these characters are not
provided as extended ANSI characters for the standard Arial
(Universal/Helvetica) and New Times Roman fonts that come with MS
Windows. These diacritical marks include the grave, acute, tilde,
dieresis (umlaut), Hungarian umlaut, macron, breve, circumflex, caron,
ring, cedilla, lenis, asper, and several others with non-household
names. Special letters include the slash O and L, German double S, and
AE.
Currently, the following 23 languages are supported:
Albanian Latvian (Lettish)
Croatian Lithuanian
Czech Norwegian
Danish Polish
Dutch Portuguese
Esperanto Roumanian
Estonian Slovak
Finnish Slovenian
French Spanish
German Swedish
Hungarian Turkish
Italian
EUROPEAN is an economical and affordable alternative to commercial
foreign language word processors and add-on fonts costing $99 and
more. Individual characters are mapped in ANSI locations 033 - 114
(82 uppercase letters), 128 - 213 (85 lowercase letters), while other
special characters are located at 224 - 231. As in most word
processors running under MS Windows, single characters are easily
inserted at the cursor position by using the following key strokes
using the numeric keypad with the NumLock key on:
^^^^^^^ ^^^^^^ ^^^^ ^^^ ^^^^^^^ ^^^ ^^
<ALT> + <0> + <ANSI code>
That is, while pressing the ALT key, enter 0 and then the 3-number
ANSI code. For example, pressing ALT 0041 gives Ä, while pressing ALT
0178 gives ñ. Using shareware packages like FontShow, Printers
Assistant, FontMonster, OKFonts, TypeView, etc., allows you to
conveniently make an ANSI map of the characters. For standard letters,
no having diacritical marks, you then return to using either the Arial
(Universal/Helvetica), or New Times Roman font. The trial version
includes only the Helvetica font.
An alternate and more convenient method of entering characters is to
use Foreigner, which is available as fornr310.zip using anonymous ftp
from ftp.cica.indiana,edu in the pub/pc/win3/util directory. It is a
better alternative to MS Windows' charmap utility.
FILES:
This trial package is distributed with the following files:
README.1ST This is the file you are reading
HISTORY.DOC EUROPEAN ropean revision history
REGISTER.DOC License information and order form
EURHELV.TTF EUROPEAN Helvetica Truetype file
EURHELV.AFM EUROPEAN Helvetica Adobe Font Metrics file
EURHELV.PFB EUROPEAN Helvetica Postscript file
EURHELV.PFM EUROPEAN Helvetica Postscript file
The registered version of EUROPEAN supports the following
standard MS Windows typefaces:
Arial/WN Universal (EurHelv)
Times New Roman (EurTimes)
In addition, the registered version includes a manual describing the
what diacritical marks/unique characters are available, character set,
and ANSI map, none of which cannot be properly provided in an ASCII
file such as this, and a unregistered shareware version of Foreigner.
EurHelv and EurTimes are distributed with both TrueType (.TTF)
and PostScript/Adobe Type 1 (.AFM, .PFB, and .PFM) files which allow
scalable point sizes and provide support for printers supported by
Microsoft Windows. Since EurHelv, and EurTimes fonts are attached to
the operating system of Microsoft Windows and are not part of a
particular Word Processor, they are available to any and all Windows
executable programs which allow for full font selection.
EUROPEAN is available as shareware. It may be examined, tested,
and tried out for free on a 30-day trial basis for the purpose of
determining whether EUROPEAN is suitable for your needs. The use of
unlicensed copies of EUROPEAN, outside of the initial 30-day trial, by
any person, business, corporation, government agency or any other
entity is strictly prohibited.
The use of EUROPEAN, except for the initial 30-day trial,
requires registration (See REGISTER.DOC) and pay a registration fee of
$10.00 ($US) for the 5-¼" disk (add $1 for the 3-½" disk); Overseas
add $1 fr airmail. At this price, I won't become a millionaire but it
will not break **your** bank. It merely helps pay for the commercial
software used in creating these fonts in the first place, postage,
diskette, and paper.
